Making the "inexplicable" understandable: Leopold von Ranke consolidated

  • Christian Müller

Abstract

Dominik Juhnke tries the impossible and detects the problem early in his biography: Leopold Ranke seems "kaum zu fassen" (p.8), he appears too complex in his personality for any attempt to classify: Whether as a dissatisfied teacher in Frankfurt (Oder), as a "moderner Wissenschaftspionier des 19. Jahrhunderts" or "klischeehafter Eigenbrötler" (ibid.). For the reader Ranke appears at first as a bulky personality whose posthumous legacy would suffocate through its own monumentality (see p. 7). Despite these difficulties, the author succeeds with an interesting approach.
