Philosophising with Art

In her book Verletzbare Orte (Vulnerable Places) philosopher Gesa Ziemer rethinks the relation between the seeming dichotomies of philosophy/art and theory/praxis. Deleuze and Blumenberg serve as a starting point in Ziemer's argument that philosophy of art is more than just thinking about art; introducing the idea of vulnerability, she suggests that philosophical aesthetics is thinking with art. Ziemer pays particular attention thereby to intersections of theory and praxis, such as bodily aspects of the language-based humanities on the one hand, and theoretical affinities in the work of certain performance artists, on the other. By supplementing the monograph with the film Point of View, Ziemer practices what she preaches: the juxtaposition of art and theory as mutual (and equally significant) sources of inspiration.
