Abstract

Published in 2006, the 10 essays in Das schlechte Gewissen der Moderne (The Bad Conscience of the Modern) use a range of methods firmly grounded in post-modern research to examine themes of violence and their increase in the period's film and literature. Encompassing theories from media and gender studies as well as post-Freudian, post-colonial, and discourse-analytical perspectives, the volume primarily handles (North) American horror films, but also includes forays into Russian literature (Sorokin), the French Nouvelle Vague (Godard), and Japanese extreme cinema (Miike).
