In three chapters, Julia Frohn depicts the essential elements of German domestic literature exchange from the early post-war period to the signing of the basic treaty of 1972. Beginning with an outline of the book markets and the applicable regulations in both German states, she unfolds the relations developed between publishers and authors regarding joint book projects. Based on prominent case studies, a comprehensive image starts to take shape, not only of the exchange of books and licenses, but also of the incessant, anything-but-simple cultural contact between East and West.
