Challenging Boundaries: On Participatory Narratives of Migration in the Museum Project "Neuzugänge"

In their edited volume Neuzugänge, Lorraine Bluche, Christine Gerbich, Susan Kamel, Susanne Lanwerd, and Frauke Miera evaluate and reflect upon their joint laboratory exhibition about migration that was shown at the Museum Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg in Berlin. The authors call for more public engagement in the collection process and in the conceptualization of exhibitions in order to gradually bring more narratives of migration to the repertoire of German museums. However, the book points also to the boundaries of participation. Just how much inclusion of visitors is possible – how willing are museums to open up?
