Abstract

This monograph by Ulinka Rublack is devoted to a systematic investigation of the historical development of fashion and dress-code in connection with the ideas, feelings, and ambitions of people at the time of Renaissance. A golden thread of the book is the thesis that there is a permanent connection and complementarity between material world and the world of ideas. Thanks to its notably interdisciplinary theme, good question formulation, persuasive arguments, and compelling conclusions – as, for instance, the mutual influence of the new meaning of appearance, arising consumerism, and economic development, or the connection between clothes and internationalization in the Renaissance – the work is a successful and worthy achievement in scholarly discourse.
