Push and Pull in Democracy: The EU as Protagonist in the Democratisation of Spain and Slovakia

  • Anne Rühl

Abstract

Marianne Kneuer's monograph Demokratisierung durch die EU. Süd- und Ostmitteleuropa im Vergleich (Democratisation by the EU. Spain and Slovakia in Comparison) examines the influence of the European Community/Union in democratising entering countries during the southern expansion of the 1980's and the eastern expansion of the 1990's. Methodologically, Kneuer uses theoretical models and prior findings from two facets of political science: international relations and transition studies. On this basis Kneuer develops a tool for the analysis of external factors in the democratisation process which she then utilizes for a pair of case studies.
